Thoughts On The Current Meta

:: Introduction ::

It's been a while and I think it's time for another meta analysis piece. The last such piece I wrote was back in March and you can find it here. Note that this analysis is based on SR2017, more specifically the last version which was in CID.

Since last time there have been multiple releases and quite a few builds in the themes we've known for a while have stabilized somewhat. As always there's a lot ahead of us as well. In other words this piece is unlikely to be 100% relevant for very long. Furthermore I expect a lot of players out there to sit on answers which have yet to be publicly known.

:: Faction Ranking ::

S-tier: Cygnar, Cryx, Khador, Mercenaries
A-tier: Legion, Retribution, Convergence, Skorne
B-tier: Circle, Protectorate
C-tier: Minions, Trollbloods

Cygnar's really strong right now with multiple exciting and viable builds. Cryx has taken a big step up with Ghost Fleet claiming many events recently. To be fair I think a lot of this success comes from people not expecting those kinds of builds. As the meta adapt I believe Ghost Fleet will be less dominant. Khador feels very strong and flexible, in many ways like Cygnar. I also believe Mercs are still top-tier, they frequently place very well and have a range of viable approaches.

Legion's fallen down a notch because they struggle with Ghost Fleet and because Cygnar players have found pretty stable answers to them. Retribution got an expected boost from their Command book and jumps up a notch. This might be a little early yet, we'll see. Convergence is surprisingly strong now. They are quite rare but I won't take their success away because of that: I find them really hard to play with some amazing lists. Skorne is still in the A-tier but only barely, they have a distinct weakness against Ghost Fleet with their current popular lists for example.

Circle has fallen a bit, they seem to really struggle these days. It's not that they don't have answers but more that their answers are kind of specialized. Thus their pairings often have a lot of holes. Protectorate sits in the same bracket because they have yet to find a solid pair for Amon.

At the bottom sadly I believe we still have Minions and Trollbloods. I hope both of these factions receive some love ASAP.

And now, what you've all been waiting for: Sample lists!

I really had to make a choice here because there are so many choices! I'm obviously biased here but I truly think the above 3 are probably our strongest. In addition to these the Welsh Masters finals recently featured a Cygnar mirror where one player had Stryker1 in his pairing and the other had Haley3. In my opinion these 2 casters are still very strong and have multiple approaches. I also think Nemo3 is still worth considering, he is a very strong caster in many, many matchups.

I don't want to dwell on Cryx too much. Ghost Fleet pretty much sums up Cryx right now. However the Bane theme is just around the corner and I fully expect that to shake things up, including an Asphyxious2 revival (to the joy of all Mk. 2 Cryx players). The lists above are incredibly strong and they cover eachother's weaknesses quite well.

Khador has a ton of strong builds these days, I think it's hard to choose just a couple. In the end I went with Vlad1 and Karchev because I see them a lot, they've been around for a while and they are pretty terrifying in the right matchups. The pair also has answers to most things in the meta. Apart from these I see Zerkova1 Steel Legion, variants of Butcher1 and Butcher3 in Winter Guard Kommand, Vlad2 Steel Legion, Sorscha1 Winter Guard Kommand and still the occasional Harkevich build. Khador's in an excellent spot!

Mercenary lists are so different, I had to include 3 to properly show the choices they have. The above lists are all really solid and scary to play against, and on top of that we also see variants such as Ossrum in theme and Damiano or Magnus2 running Kingmaker's instead of MacBain.

Fyanna2 seems to be the hotness in Legion still. Her feat is a big pain to play against so I can definitely see this. Absylonia2 still has beyond crazy damage output while Lylyth3 is a strong cookie-cutter with Oracles. In addition to these three I see some Vayl2 builds and variants of Thagrosh1 and Thagrosh2. Legion currently struggles with Cryx and Cygnar the most I believe so I'm interested to see what answers they'll find here.

The new Command book brought some much needed love back to this faction! I'm not yet sure where it all lands as it's early days yet. Vyros2 in Forges seems to be a solid start. With or without Helios depends on preference I believe. I'm personally not a fan but from what I've gathered it appears to be the more popular choice. Ossyan can build scary Shadows lists which seem quite well suited to take on Cryx for example and probably also Cygnar. Rahn and Helynna are still popular and I fully expect Retribution players to find interesting lists with Issyria and Kaelyssa as well. Their battle engine might also become a thing depending on where it ends up following CID.

I suppose Axis has strictly speaking been the more popular alternative than Father lately. My main reason for not including him is that I've just about only seen his lists with ADR, which this analysis doesn't take into account. Father and Mother make for a pretty solid pairing regardless, having game into the majority of other factions for sure.

These builds have been stable for some time and I have not seen Skorne come up with something else to rival these yet. That being said I fully believe that to be just around the corner now: I believe both these lists were comparatively stronger in SR2016 and Ghost Fleet steamrolls the both of them. If I were to guess the answer's in their shooty theme list somehow. I played against a variant of this with Xerxis2 a while back. He didn't seem like the right choice but Skorne have a lot of other interesting casters for this role.

Popular Circle builds these days seem to all be "Heroclix" variants: You load up on character beasts outside of theme and play with all the tricks and shenanigans in the world. The problem is that in a lot of matchups this simply isn't what you need. I believe Circle's answers probably exist in theme forces as well, e.g. Baldur2 with lots of stones and Krueger2 with lots of infantry. Other casters which I expect to see include Wurmwood, Una2, Morvahna2 and Kaya3. I hope for Circle that a strong pairing emerges soon. The Fulcrum's promising in CID so this might be an enabler as well.

Sadly, I have no idea what to pair with Amon. Part of the reason why I elected not to include a second list is that the Exemplar theme is right around the corner and -that- looks super promising! Once that's out I think we'll see some new and cool builds which will help out the Protectorate again. Interesting casters include Severius1, Severius2 and Harbinger for starters.

Trollbloods still feel like they're at the bottom with Minions. They have so many bad matchups, a lot of them downright unplayable. Their biggest strength these days seems to be that people don't expect them and thus don't know the matchup. The Kriel theme is coming up and maybe their third gargantuan might help them out. I really think this faction needs a significant buff.

In the time to come I expect most factions to work on the matchups against the perceived top dogs. Many will disagree with what I've written here and some will disagree with nearly all of it. In any case we all have our problematic matchups which we're trying to solve. With tons of stuff in CID and more releases coming up I expect the summer to be highly dynamic meta-wise. I'm excited!

List Musings

The last two months have been crazy. Following SmogCon I've been dojoing like mad, trying to find our optimal pair. I've played a ton of games and spent countless hours tweaking, reviewing, thinking, discussing and cursing because my list doesn't add up. I finally landed on a pair I really liked. My main concerns were meta-benders I didn't know beforehand and lack of experience against crucial matchups. Towards the end of the process I had no time to write about my findings and my rationale. Now, however, I do. As such I want to detail the journey from SmogCon to Lund and explain in-depth why I took the lists I did. Make no mistake, not a single choice in either list was random!

Let's rewind a bit. Prior to SmogCon we were told that Heavy Metal would not be playable. The hype was all about Storm Division then. It turned out that Heavy Metal was indeed playable, but that's another story. Patrick Dunford showed us all that Stryker1 and Haley2, both in Storm Division, was the pair to beat. He went undefeated throughout the weekend, which is an amazing feat considering the huge field!

Following SmogCon I started dojoing and practicing with Stryker1 in Heavy Metal, Nemo3 in Storm Division and Haley2 in both. I came to the realization relatively quickly that Stryker1 didn't work with double 'walls. Nemo3 had some glaring weaknesses and I found that whenever I had him in my pairing I would have multiple issues neither of my casters handled well, which I expected to be present at a tournament. I love playing Nemo3 but unfortunately I realized quickly that he wouldn't make my pair.

One of the lists I tried out with Haley2 was the Electrobots-variant. Running 4 heavies in total backed by 2 Fireflies and Thorn took her damage output to the next level. In some matchups she was a pure battery almost, spending most of her stack simply fueling her jacks. This was a strong list with some amazing matchups. However I struggled with its defensive capabilities. Games against casters like Krueger2 and Fyanna2 showed me this and made me miss my Stormwall. Speaking of which...

I ran Stryker1 in heavy metal with double Stormwalls for a while. It was a pretty solid build. I did find two things however which I could never get around: The first was that I thought I had the defensive tech to whether mostly anything in melee on feat turn. That turned out not to be the case and I had multiple games where I simply couldn't play as aggressively as I wanted in fear of the 'walls going down despite Stryker1 feating. The second was that the more my opponents got used to fighting double biglies, the more they found plays which made life miserable for me. The list is inherently inflexible and you can be forced to spend a disproportionate amount of effort to rid yourself of small problems. The last nail in the coffin for me was a game against Iron Mother (link), which showed me Stryker could not even handle Convergence, something I had really hoped that he could seeing as Haley2 struggles against Iron Mother.

I next set my eyes on Sloan while at the same time evolving my Haley2 list further. I believe in trying out extremes and experimenting. Read more on my thoughts about army list creation here. As such it was natural for me to start Sloan at all out shooting. My first game with her featured 5 Hunters and a Stormwall (report is here). It was pretty much the cookie-cutter Sloan list which builds itself and everyone has found it. Through a series of iterative steps I realized that the main problem with this list was its inability to deal with jam. I think that whether you have 4 or 5 Hunters is largely irrelevant in a shooting matchup. I very much doubt that -that- difference is what makes you win or lose the game. On the other hand, adding more anti-jam elements would greatly help me in a number of matchups where the shooting simply isn't strong enough. The first list change saw a somewhat... unorthodox choice being picked up.

The Hammersmith is a piece which multiple players have asked me to try out. Incidentally, before I picked it up with Sloan I had tried it with Haley2 for a few games. While it was decent with Haley2 (more on this later), it truly came into its own with Sloan. You see, people don't like having Sloan's Hunters keep shooting. One of the ways to do stop them from doing so is to engage them. A Hammersmith is very good at getting models disengaged. Even if you don't kill your target they will be pushed or slammed away. Unlike the Ironclad - which is the natural alternative assuming you want a beatstick - the Hammersmith has equally good weapons on both L and R. This means that a spike in one column won't render it a lot worse. On the contrary the Hammersmith can still largely fulfil its role with a single weapon system intact. It's not ideal, but it's doable. SPD4 is a bit of a pain, but in practice I've found that ARM19 often makes up for it. It becomes just tough enough to shrug off most harm intended for it. Sidekick is better with DEF12 in a nutshell, but the base of 13/19 really has become a thing with the Hammersmith. It's a piece which is very hard to prioritize with all the Hunters around. Indeed you use it as a mobile shield in many matchups. The ability to move it out of activation with Energizer means it can often fulfil this role very well.

I've gotten a few questions about the 4th Hunter being on Junior. What I've experienced with Sloan is that often times, I want my non-Hunter light jack to operate aggressively and sometimes a bit away from my strong flank. This has lead to Junior hardly ever being in range because he'd be too jeopardized in those positions. At the same time, the Hunter on Sloan mainly has one advantage over a Hunter on Junior and that is the feat shot. Sloan has 7 focus and Arlan provides an 8th. If you don't need guided fire (which you do, very often!), you can boost her 2 shots, the Stormwall's 2 shots and 4 Hunter shots. However you almost always want Refuge on Sloan and/or camp, which means that in practice I hardly ever allocate all of her focus. As such the difference is one unboosted Hunter shot by and large. By comparison the Firefly doesn't need a whole lot but he really likes the feat shot. He's there to enable me to deal with volume and an extra shot really lets him do so. Overall this is a battlegroup change I've been really happy with.

The ensuing Sloan list I took to Lund was optimal. Given what I knew about the meta and the preparations I did, I could not have found a better list. I've been critisized by some for not just going with 5 Hunters. Quite frankly I think that is sub-optimal. In theory you lack punch when melee inevitably happens. In practice I have many games highlighting the MVP Hammersmith getting work done. If I were to highlight a single game where the Hammersmith was crucial it would have to be this one: Sloan vs Vayl2.

Here is the resulting Sloan list I took to Lund:

Cygnar - Firing Solution v4
Theme: Heavy Metal
4 / 4 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army
Armory - Steamroller Objective
Captain Kara Sloan - WJ: +28
- Squire - PC: 0

- Firefly - PC: 8
Captain Arlan Strangewayes - PC: 0
Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 0
- Hunter - PC: 11
Lieutenant Allison Jakes - PC: 0
- Hammersmith - PC: 12

While I initially liked the Electrobots, I found it to be a "win harder" kind of list. It plays the good matchups extremely well, but the list doesn't help me in the iffy matchups where I feel Haley really needs help. Examples include Lylyth3, Krueger2, various mirrors and Vlad1. At least, possibly more.

I knew I wanted to get back to the Thornwall build I've come to love. The question was, how do I build around it? For a long time now I've been a fan of a Firefly in this list because it adds so much utility. I could not find a decent list with it though. Due to Haley2 having +25 warjack points precisely it's so much harder for her to make these things add up than e.g. Sloan. Following various group chat dojo sessions I ended up with a draft without the Firefly though. I must admit it didn't look half bad. I also decided to test the Hammersmith. The idea was that with "only" two heavies and a colossal (as opposed to the electrobots' 4 heavies) I wanted more volume. Against almost any target in the game the Hammersmith has more damage output than the Ironclad. While SPD4 indeed is problematic I've found that with Haley2 in heavy metal her feat is often to set up for a play rather than to cover a play. As such the third piece tends to run anyway. The aforementioned benefits of ARM19 and double weapon systems indeed apply to Haley2 as well. I've found that in some games the Hammersmith's taken an amazing amount of punishment before eventually going down. For Cygnar this is very valuable. As a rule of thumb we attrition really well. Our ability to do so comes from our ability to preserve pieces. The natural toughness of the Hammersmith makes it more forgiving as an aggressively played piece.

Here is the resulting Haley2 list I took to Lund:

Cygnar - Technical Death Metal v4
[Theme] Heavy Metal
(Haley 2) Major Victoria Haley [+25]
- Charger [9]
- Hammersmith [12]
- Stormwall [39]
- Thorn [13]
- Squire [0]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0]
Journeyman Warcaster [0]
- Charger [9]
Lieutenant Allison Jakes [4]
- Stormclad [18]

As opposed to Sloan, my Haley list could have done with more playtesting and tweaks. To be fair a couple of the issues I've found her to need help against have been virtually non-existant in my meta lately so in reality it would've been impossible for me to get the necessary practice games. However now that I've been abroad and seen what people play I sure do have a few ideas. The main idea, as always, is to see how far we can stretch this list before it's too much. More specifically I want to make Haley2 shooty. The question is how shooty can she be without losing out against ARM-skew variants? A lot of her matchups really hate Cygnar shooting. First off though I must test the limits. There's no way I'm taking Haley2 without tools to deal with ARM-skew variants such as Amon and Karchev for example.

I have a feeling I'll want to swap 2 Chargers for a Stormclad, but here's the Haley2 list I indeed to playtest:

Cygnar - Technical Death Metal v5
Theme: Heavy Metal
4 / 4 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army
Armory - Steamroller Objective
Major Victoria Haley - WJ: +25
- Squire - PC: 0
- Thorn - PC: 13
- Stormwall - PC: 39 (Battlegroup Points Used: 25)
- Lightning Pod
- Cyclone - PC: 13
- Firefly - PC: 8
Captain Arlan Strangewayes - PC: 0
Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 0
- Charger - PC: 9
Lieutenant Allison Jakes - PC: 0
- Charger - PC: 9
- Charger - PC: 9

I've also played Darius a bit. Sadly, I found him lacking. There's too much power around now to rely on his feat. He was a lot of fun to play and certainly has a few dynamics which make him a lot more suited for double colossal builds than e.g. Stryker1. If only he had the +5 ARM feat... One can dream! Nemo3 received a couple of honorary games at Lund as well. I have couple of heavy metal ideas for him revolving around Firefly spam. I hope to get around to fielding it in the not-too distant future. Nemo3's a caster I really enjoy. He's different and his feat turn is so destructive by Cygnar standards. As always I'm looking for Haley3 variants as well. Temporal Distortion and Echoes are very strong, surely there must be something here.

As it's been for a while, it's exciting to play the Swans. I'm looking forward to trying them out in SR2017. From what I've been able to theorymachine out the scenarios should fit my lists quite well. Practice will tell whether this is correct. I can hardly wait...

Thoughts On The Current Meta

:: Introduction ::

As the regular readers of this blog know I make these meta posts every now and then. The last time was a little over a month ago and you can find the piece here. It's crazy how quickly this game changes now!

Since last time we've gotten more themes, more command books, more models and a few important tournaments. This has shaken things up quite a bit. Very interesting! I love the state of the game right now. So many things to consider and nothing is really way out of line. As per usual I feel that what the game needs most is a buff to the ones at the bottom. Still though, Warmachine and Hordes is better than it's ever been!

:: Faction Ranking ::

S-tier: Legion, Cygnar, Mercs, Khador
A-tier: Circle, Skorne, Convergence
B-tier: Protectorate, Retribution, Cryx
C-tier: Minions, Trollbloods

Legion's back with the top dogs after they got a really, really strong theme force in Oracles of Annihilation. AdeptiCon showed this pretty well with strong performances from Legion throughout the weekend. An added bonus for Legion is that their new theme plays very well into a couple of the other top dogs, which ensures them a spot in the S-tier.

I've also upped Convergence a bit. They are really finding their stride with Destruction Initiative. I said it when the theme forces were revealed that Convergence got the biggest boost, relatively speaking. I still stand by that. A couple of problematic matchups, Legion for example, keep them from going S-tier. Ironically I made this ranking just before AdeptiCon happened so it was a perfect fit for Convergence to make such a strong showing in that event (one of the semi-finals in the Masters was Convergence mirror).

Protectorate has dropped a tier. It boils down to no good pair for Amon, on top of Amon now suddenly struggling with e.g. Legion. I had hopes initially that Amon would find a suitable partner but I haven't seen anyone solve this yet.

Time for the sample lists!

Legion jumped up a lot with Oracles. It's an amazing theme force for theme which allows some truly brutal lists. In addition to the caster above, I think Vayl2 and Thagrosh1 will still be fairly popular. The latter might indeed surprise us, with Typhon as his character warbeast I can definitely see him making a solid list or two.

Sloan is the big new-comer! I expect we'll see a lot of her in the time to come. Cygnar is in a great spot right now. There are so many viable approaches! Storm Division is already fading in my opinion because the rest of the top dogs in the meta naturally come with great counters to Storm Lances: Legion, Mercenaries and Khador all have lists which deal with Warmachine's most hated cavalry unit quite well. Stryker1 has the defensive tech to allow Storm Lances to weather a lot of this, but against the new Legion for example I am pretty sure even he struggles. Darius might be a caster which is playable with a doublewall setup, Stryker2 is popular and the good old Haley3 build is still solid. On top of these casters and the sample lists above, there exists a myriad of builds for Cygnar now. Narrowing them down inevitably boils down to personal preference and experience.

Ossrum is still the de facto Mercs caster and the bunnies are as terrifying as ever. Now you have the option to go in theme. I'm not sure which is better yet, what Eiryss1 and Aiyana + Holt bring to the table is so valuable. MacBain has sailed up as a really solid caster and I expect we'll see a lot more of him in the time to come. Magnus2 still sees some play as well. I struggle to understand why but I might be biased from a Cygnar point of view, Thexus still sees a lot of play and the humble Damiano is a force to be reckoned with.

Khador is very versatile and, like Cygnar, in a great spot right now. They have too many builds to list them all here. I recently wrote an in-depth post on them, check it out here. To summarize their interesting casters briefly I believe all of the Vlads, Butcher1, Butcher3, Kozlov, Zerkova1, Sorscha1, Karchev and Irusk2 are all potentially viable competitive choices.

I don't believe Circle has fully landed following the Una2 nerf. On top of that Wurmwood is no longer the powerhouse he used to be because of meta changes. Combined these two mean that Circle is currently a little "all over the place". Krueger2 has sailed up as the number 1 Circle caster in my experience, but the question is who does he pair with? In addition to Wurmwood I see people experimenting with Kaya3, Una2, Baldur2 and even Morvahna2 for a pairing spot. I think we might not see Circle land properly before SR2017 is out.

Swamp Gobber Chef [1]
Legends of Halaak [8]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]

Skorne seems to be all about Makeda as far as competitive builds are concerned. In my experience the second iteration of this caster is the best one. Makeda1 arguably handles ARM-skew better, but the Ferox train Makeda2 brings is surprisingly good at dealing with quite a lot of ARM as well. Other casters are experimented with of course but I have yet to see any of them rival one of the Makedas for a spot in a top pairing.

Convergence has a couple of really solid builds now. Father and Mother still seem to be leading the way, with arguably Axis rivalling the former. The main reason I haven't included Axis is because I haven't found a non-ADR list version for him. I've been told Destruction Initiative was a big help and my experience against Convergence certainly confirm that. Interestingly enough they are suddenly a very strong faction vs Cygnar now.

Following the nerf to High Reclaimer my experience is that the Protectorate has yet to land on a stable pairing. Amon is the number 1 caster now but with recent buffs to Legion in particular he's suddenly behind, or so it feels. High Reclaimer might still be the best to run with him, with a more troop oriented approach. I don't know, the faction is trailing a bit unfortunately. Feora3 and Severius2 are some of the more popular ones I see people testing outside of Amon and HR.

Ben Fuzi recently won the Netherlands Masters with Retribution. This undoubtedly shows his skills as a player and it also shows how small the gap is between top dog and factions lacking just a bit right now. Vyros2 in Forges of War seems to be a staple choice now and the list above is a direct copy of Ben's from said event. Kaelyssa of various flavours is a very common Retribution caster as well and in pair with Vyros2 you have a pretty solid combo. Apart from these two it is my experience that Helynna and Rahn are the most common Retribution casters at the moment. Retribution has a lot of goodies coming right around the corner and with SR2017 I fully expect this faction to change drastically over the next few months in terms of competitive builds.

Cryx is an interesting faction which has seen a roller-coaster ride the past year. From being one of the best in Mk. 2 they took a dive in Mk. 3 but have gradually gotten better. Players figured out the powerful Deneghra1/Coven combination, only to have releases like Una2 and Cygnar Storm Division say a big "no". With the most recent releases Cryx looks to be back in style again. Some might argue they deserve a higher tier rating than I've given them here. While that might be true, I think it's too early to say. One of the main weaknesses I see with Cryx now is that their pairings tend to struggle to achieve stability. That is, against a variety of opponents they will have a lot of really bad matchups, which inherently hurts the faction as a whole from a competitive point of view. The lists above showcases a few of the different approaches Cryx can take now. With the command book stuff being so fresh, and again SR2017 around the corner, I expect the Cryx community as a whole to develop a lot of interesting and new lists in the time to come.

Minions suffer from the fact that not a lot of people play them. On top of that they have fallen drastically, from being one of the top dogs last fall to being one of the worse factions. I think there might be hidden value in Minions which has yet to be revealed, but as of now it's hard to give them a lot of credit. Dr. Arkadius and the new gator theme both seem like interesting choices for Minions. Carver can still present a very durable and hard-hitting force. That being said, these things might look good on paper but without results there's not much to speak of.

Trollbloods are in my opinion still at the bottom, trailing hard. Their builds look ok in a vacuum, but they struggle against so many other factions and have very few, if any, matchups where they feel downright up. I hope Privateer Press acknowledges this problem soon because this is the number one faction in the game I feel needs more love right now.

To finish off this blog post I'd like to note that it's unlikely to remain relevant for long. On top of the usual stuff we are missing (Skorne and Retribution command books for example), I fully expect SR2017 to fundamentally alter the way this game is played. Although the document itself isn't coming out until June (I believe?), it was confirmed by Pagani on Twitter to enter CID mid-late April, according to schedule. Given that a lot of people prepare for the WTC I expect tons of playtesting and perhaps even some tournaments with the tentative SR2017 ruleset from early May. As per usual, this post is just a snapshot based on how I view the meta right now. I hope you find it useful, or at the very least interesting!

Khador Musings

In a recent public poll I posted where I asked people to vote for what faction I should analyze, Khador came out on top. Although Khador has never appealed to me personally, I love their presence in the game both thematically and gameplay-wise. In Mk. 2 Khador felt left behind compared to the other top dogs. In Mk. 3 however they got a significant boost. Ever since the release last summer I believe Khador has been among the very best factions in the game. They also have solid internal balance (especially their casters!) with the choices they take largely depending on what the meta has, in my experience. Obviously the Winter Guard theme force is incredibly strong and somewhat polarizes Khador lists, but I think we'll see a lot more than Rockets and Juggernauts in the long run. However you build Khador, the list tends to be very brutal in my experience: Lots of durability and hitting power in various combinations. Let's take a look at where they have been, where they are and where they could possibly go!

I remember going to Iron Moot 2016. The drive was a few hours from Oslo so we signed up for a late Steamroller on Friday and drove down the same morning. That Steamroller turned out to be a shark tank of epic proportions. Out of 32 players I believe well over half of them were WTC players (or at least of that caliber!). One of the players present had an obscene amount of jacks. He had literally borrowed Mad Dogs from all over Sweden. Little did I know at the time that I would face this list in a big game the next day. I was stunned to see that it was even possible and the talk started: Where did this list come from? How did they get there? The story I was told was that one of the Swedes, Jocke Rapp I believe, sat down with the Khador book basically immediately after the Mk. 3 release and spotted the Mad Dog entry. The question begged itself: "This jack looks underpriced, if we just spam the shit out of it, what caster is best?". Karchev (with the pre-nerf feat) stood out as the best candidate by far. The rest, as they say, is history (Privateer Press on Karchev). Coupled with this Karchev list we saw a number of variants, some of which are still popular today: Vlad1 with rockets, Butcher3 with heavies, Vlad2 with a combined-arms approach, Irusk2 with dude-spam and some even more exotic variants. At WTC2016 Khador had one of the best (if not the very best) caster spread, a testament in my opinion to their internal faction caster balance.

Fast forward to today and we now have 3 themes which all seek to polarize Khador lists. One of them, the Winter Guard one, is already tested and proven to be solid. In many ways like our Storm Division it feels like good ol' Machinations from Mk. 2: You get everything you want and receive bonus points and other benefits. Pretty sweet deal! Casters like Sorscha1 and Vlad1 love this setup, tons of freebies -and- a huge boost to survivability. I've also seen Butcher1 exploit the possibilities here.

With the Winter Guard theme dominating, let's look at some sample lists. My first example comes from Canada. Bubba Dalton I've been told is an amazing player and he sure has a lot of results to show to. He recently took first place in the Ontario Team Championship where he played the following Butcher1 list in his pair:
Butcher 1 Winterguard Kommand
Ruin
Marauder
Marauder
Marauder
Marauder
Winter Guard Rifle Corps (min)
Winter Guard Rocketeer
Winter Guard Rocketeer

Winter Guard Rocketeer
Winter Guard Rocketeer
Winter Guard Rifle Corps (min)
Winter Guard Rocketeer
Winter Guard Rocketeer
Winter Guard Rocketeer
Jozef Grigorovich
Winter Guard Mortar Crew
Winter Guard Field Gun Crew
A very classic list which illustrates my point about how Khador is about durability and projecting force. This is just plain brutal with few tricks to speak of. Ruin is a solid jack and if you want him in the theme you have to take Butcher. I take it Bubba didn't consider this to be a disadvantage and who am I to question him? The Marauders are numerous and under Butcher's feat they become downright ridiculous against huge based models, which a lot of lists (Cygnar in particular!) feature these days.

The next example comes from the other side of the world. Chris Davies from Australia had an absolutely achievement last year. He won the Iron Gaunlet, Warmachine Weekend Invitationals -and- the WTC. I don't think anyone's ever done it before in the same year and I would be extremely impressed if anyone can replicate it. In my opinion, this makes it interesting to listen to what he has to say. He's not correct by default, but he clearly understands a thing or two about this game which the vast majority of the rest of us never will. A couple of months ago he had a pretty good run at CanCon where he played this Sorscha1 list:
Sorscha 1
Spriggan

Winter Guard Infantry (max)

Jozef Grigorovich
Gun Carriage
He wrote on Twitter that he did find the list solid. Granted, this was before the sac-nerf (Sorscha could sac to the Gun Carriage) so I'm not 100% if this is still the preferred build. What I find interesting here though is the jack setup, and indeed the battle engine! This list lacks a lot of melee punch which we typically see e.g. Vlad1 and Butcher1 provide to supplement their impressive shooting. I like it when people take it all out and that seems to be exactly what Chris has done here. I've also seen Sorscha1 with a Conquest which would be a natural start for me personally as I love the stability a colossal provides defensively, especially with squishy casters who like to play aggressively on their feat turn (which Sorscha certainly does).

The next example is a vanilla Vlad1 list which is played locally. The basic recipe for Vlad1 seems to be 5 heavies, (flavour depending on taste) and rockets. This accomplishes a nice balance between the threat his shooting proposes with Signs and Portents, combined with a very nasty counter-charge through his feat once the opponent starts closing in.

I see variants of this list popping up regularly in many places, from DGI's tournament overview to forums and social media. You could go even more extreme but the setup above appears to be the most common variant in my experience.

The last common caster now is somewhat of a European phenomenon: Harkevich. I haven't see him around elsewhere a lot. That doesn't mean he doesn't exist necessarily as far from everything makes the internet. I find Harkevich to be tricky to play against, the combination of Khador jacks' innate durability combined with his feat, field marshal and clouds make it a hard nut to crack.

I'm not sure how important advanced move is on multiple jacks, the infantry could be made to a min unit to make room for an artillery piece, thereby granting 2 Kodiaks advanced move.

Obviously the Rockets are all over the place. It is their theme force! In many ways it's like Cygnar and Storm Lances. Personally I think that's fine. It's just what the faction is about. Like we got Heavy Metal, Khador now has a jack theme as well. Perhaps the de facto Khador template consisting of 3x3 Rockets, some heavies and add caster to taste will be challenged by this? It's early days yet but even prior to this theme I saw Khador players experiment with Butcher3 and Karchev as jack spammers for example. I think the new theme might just be legit enough to make these approaches as viable as the rocket-builds, perhaps even more. Consider this for example:

Greylord Forge Seer - PC: 0
Greylord Forge Seer - PC: 0
Manhunter - PC: 0
2x Kayazy Eliminators Units - PC: 10
You have 9 heavies, 2 extra focus dudes/solos and 2 units. I think the inclusion of the Kayazy in this theme is a brilliant idea. The main problem for such lists in a lot of matchups is to be physically blocked out from scenario, which can lead to the CP running away before your strong attrition game can catch up. Kayazy are a cheap and effective way to counter this. Although this list isn't Mad Dogs v2.0, it still looks like a scary spam to me for sure. I can definitely see something like this paired with a more shooty variant becoming a staple Khador pairing.

The infantry spam theme is also interesting. I don't really know how effective spamming infantry really is, but Khador infantry is an interesting choice if you want to do so. Fairly fast, good threat projections, tons of bodies and fairly hard-hitting, Iron Fang Pikemen are not to be taken lightly. I fought my fair share of this kind of Khador list in Mk. 2 and while Haley2 dealt with it ok back then that might not necessarily be the case any longer. Casters like Vlad2, Kozlov and Vlad3 can build some scary lists. I'm eager to see if anything takes off here, it would be different given the current meta for sure!

Outside of themes I still see Vlad2 a little bit. Typically a Conquest, a shooting unit and then melee troops, either Man-o-wars or cavalry. It's a terrifying list to face and Vlad2 is a toolbox caster with a lot of unique abilities (for Khador). Looking forward it's easy to get caught up in extreme theme force variants like the 48 Pikemen approach with Kozlov or the 9 heavy build with Karchev. I think it's important to keep in mind, especially for Khador players, that there are a ton of strong casters outside of the usual suspects as well. Butcher3 is an ever-present one because of his personal ability to, well, kill basically anything. Zerkova1 and Irusk2 also have really solid skill-sets. The former is an excellent counter to Haley3 for example. I think Khador's in a really good spot right now. Some tweaks could possibly be needed but overall they are a strong, versatile faction with multiple approaches without breaking the game. Exciting to play, difficult to face, rewarding to beat.

I am by no means an autority on Khador. I play Cygnar exclusively (save for when I swap sides with an opponent every once in a while). On top of that my local meta doesn't have a lot of Khador players and neither of them are hyper-competitive. Don't get me wrong, they are far from beginners and visit tournaments regularly with strong lists so I certainly have a challenge on my hands! The volume you need to put in to be at the top in this game is staggering and very few people do that. What I'm trying to say is that I want you to make up your own mind about this, I've simply tried to take a quick dive into the "Red Army" to see what it's like there. Hopefully you found that dive interesting.
