Battle Report #255: Caine2 vs Lylyth3

:: Prologue ::

The last few days have been a little slow for me, Warmahordes-wise. Real life issues and having to assemble and paint a handful of models for Iron Moot has left me with little time to play. In any case I got in two games against Legion, a sorely needed practice! Both games were with Caine2 vs Lylyth3.

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

I have a bit of experience against Lylyth3 with Haley2 and Kara Sloan. She's an incredibly fast caster with downright ridiculous threat ranges. Indeed, she was one of the reasons why I wanted to try Caine2 in the first place instead of Sloan. We were playing Extraction and Legion went first. Going second against Legion in general is bad, but a solution is often to claim one side of the table so that you can threaten the scenario. As such I picked a side with a trench and a forest on one flank where I intended to have fort Caine where he did not have vision to me and use the Stormwall as an anchor so as to establish scenario presence on that flank.

:: Game ::

Legion runs up. Escort is cast.

The two Striders on the right flank are a bit of a problem. They threaten to make so many things stationary on feat turn and I just can't have that. I pre-measure and ensure I can e-leap off of Rangers to get the both of them and decide to take the risk. It works out perfectly and I trade my 2 Rangers for the 2 Deathstalkers. The Stormwall runs up centrally. I make a mistake with Caine as he should've gone straight for the Trench with Heightened Reflexes, instead he camps behind the Stormwall. I think this is overly passive but I'm not 100% sure. The second Lances take up cover on the left flank.

Archangel and Lylyth take out the lances on the left and the entire Legion line shuffles a bit. This is the opening I discussed in my pre-game thoughts: It's very hard for him to buy space without putting himself in danger.

I make a mistake here as I go for the objective, forgetting that it's a bunker. I should've shot up Typhon but I wasted a shot on the objective. The other shot lands quite a few boxes on Typhon however as I spike. The Charger tries it luck on the Bolter but the cover granting it DEF17 keeps it safe. Lances take the flag for 1-0. Caine moves to the trench.

My opponent clearly sees the scenario angle here and as such he wants to put the pressure on me. The Blackfrost Shard moves up and puts Kiss and -2 DEF on the Stormwall. Naga casts Wraithbane on Typhon which moves up and shoots off half of the Stormwall and then some. The Bolter failed its frenzy test so it couldn't contribute as it instead charged a pod (which I had e-leaped off of to spike some boxes on him previously). It was up to Lylyth3 and the Archangel. Lylyth had to cast Wraithbane so her own presence wasn't expected to be great but she killed the Lance on the flag at least to prevent me from scoring in his turn.

The Archangel got 3 shots and the first two were average rolls, meaning he needed a staggering 15+ to kill off the Stormwall. Two sixes and a five later and I was minus one Colossal.

So quick math his heavy shooters average 6 shots at dice minus 3. All shots hitting and boosted for damage result in 45 boxes on average. 11 more is a bit of a spike, but it's not completely batshit (considering the Bolter failed its frenzy test as well). Anyway I had a bit of a pickle on my hands.

To get out of this I needed to neutralize Typhon, the Bolter and the Archangel. The Lances were within 15" easily so with Lanyssa landing Hunter's Mark I could charge the Typhon. The Charger would have to charge the Bolter and Caine's feat would have to do a -ton- of work.

I started off with Caine and he put Grievous on the Typhon along with a few boxes before he moved to the Archangel, which he left on 9 boxes. All trick shots stripped support within 4" and Grievous was landed on the gargantuan as well. Its spirit was crippled, which was kind of important. The Charger charged the Bolter to contest and do a few boxes. It left it on just a couple of boxes. Lanyssa landed Hunter's Mark on the Typhon and the Lances charged it. The e-leaps took out the Bolter but the Typhon survived on 4 boxes with only its Spirit intact. Ragman moved to the flag for a 2-1 lead. Junior put Shield up on Caine.

With the Bolter down Lylyth's threat was greatly reduced. She could possibly have tried to clear a path for Caine here as I had to move outside of the trench to reach the Typhon (I did not have any focus nor heightened reflexes up either). In any case my opponent didn't consider the option, instead trying to go for attrition. Despite losing its cortex the Archangel could do some serious work here as it was feat time: If my opponent could clear enough he might get up on scenario. The Charger went down along with a Ranger I think, Ragman was killed but 1 Lance survived, engaged by the Typhon. 2-2.

The Naga had committed in his previous turn so I had a good opening here. Caine took out the Typhon with Black Penny before killing the AA with help from Junior while Trick Shots started pounding the Naga. Having freed up the Lance I finished off my turn with charging the Naga which killed it. Arlan, being useless now that I had 0 jacks left, ran to the objective.

Lylyth kills the lance and Arlan. 3-3.

The plan is to put up Arcane Shield on the objective so Lylyth can't kill it just in case Caine rolls horribly. He does not however and Lylyth dies!

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

A very intense and interesting game! Lylyth's huge threat projection was a problem as always but I carved out the space and opening I needed. I should have placed Caine more offensively T1 I think because Reinholdt has a pretty crucial opportunity here: Strip stealth from the Blackfrost member with Kiss so Stormwall can shoot it. If I can threaten this the Stormwall can't be shot down barring insane spikes and to deny that positioning-wise he has to commit the Archangel significantly more so than he did this game, which probably means I can get better angles for my shooting.

Caine's feat turn was an act of desperation and I knew he would be in trouble. More than anything this is a result of the previous turns' mistakes and it largely boils down to playing him too defensively in the very first turn of the game. I could however have improved my defensive position here by placing Lanyssa in front of Caine. He would've had nothing else to reliably remove her with I think so that would likely mean one less shot from Lylyth (not to mention he has to make some hard priorities with only 5 fury and these 2 targets). The small things matter!

The Lances on the left flank sacrificed their lives and it might seem expensive, but considering how strong the shooting is I'm not sure it's better to have the Archangel start pounding the Stormwall. Given the position on the board he could have blessed it at which point I'm likely losing 15-20 boxes. That makes it hard to prevent him from downright killing the Stormwall in the next turn unless I give up tons of table space. Going second I think my list has to sacrifice something to deny him chipping boxes off of the Stormwall.

A great game with many learning points. I'm certain there are things Legion could've done better as well but for now I have more than enough to analyze from my own perspective.

Battle Report #254: Caine2 vs Deneghra1

:: Prologue ::

For the last game of this series vs Cryx, I took out Caine2 to face Deneghra1. Perhaps a risky matchup for Caine with the debuffs, I do believe in his ability to face Cryx in general and would at least like to try it out. Enough talk, let's jump right in!

:: Lists ::

Cygnar:
Captain Allister Caine - WJ: +27
- Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator - PC: 4
- Stormwall - PC: 39 (Battlegroup Points Used: 27)
- Lightning Pod
Captain Arlan Strangewayes - PC: 4
Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 4
- Charger - PC: 9
Gobber Tinker - PC: 2
Ragman - PC: 4
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress - PC: 3
Rangers - Leader & 5 Grunts: 9
Storm Lances - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
Storm Lances - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
Opponent:
(Deneghra 1) Warwitch Deneghra [+28]
 - Kraken [36]
 - Deathripper [6]
Croe's Cutthroats (max) [16]
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (max) [19]
Soul Trapper [1]
Wrong Eye [17]
 - Snapjaw0]
Necrotech [2]
Necrotech [2]
Warwitch Siren [4]

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

Line Breaker again and Cryx seize the initiative. I would love to go first here with Caine as I know I'll have to be cautious but it's good for practice so I don't mind. Cryx deploy quite symmetrically with the Kraken a little skewed. I reply with the Stormwall skewed diagonally and otherwise symmetrically.

:: Game ::

Cryx run up.

The Cutthroats on the right are a little too close for comfort. In this matchup he can well afford to parasite Lances at which point they will just murder them. I decide to go for a bit of a gambit: Arcane on the right Lances, run one up and Trick Shot off of it to thin them out. I also get a Ranger up so the rightmost Lance might land an assault shot. This all works out very well and I leave but 2 models remaining. Caine takes care to be outside of Deneghra's feat range.

The downside of my gambit is that the Stormwall has no Shield. A crippling grasp and some shooting later and it's -20 boxes or so.

I figure this is as good a situation as any: I can take out the Arc Node and Kraken with a little luck as I can box Caine in with the cloud and the Charger B2B and there are lots of other damage sources as well. I go for it and kill 3 Nyss on the left by pods before the Stormwall and Charger opens up on the Kraken. I move a Ranger within melee range of the Arc Node and place Ragman 3" away with Death Field. On the right I get a Lance into the Kraken as well and when it's Caine's turn to activate I manage to just blast the Kraken apart with feat: Trick shots combined with Death Field take out the Arc Node.

There are no angles for neither Caine nor scenario so Cryx concede the game.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

The Kraken is terrifying in Deneghra's hands but this game shows the weakness of taking an ARM19 colossal without defensive boosts. Between 2 boosted Stormwall shots, the Charger, an assaulting Lance and Caine2, it's quite likely to go down. That dynamic is pretty big and worth knowing about.

Caine2 into Cryx was actually more in my favour than I originally thought. In previous games I've struggled getting Caine close enough to make his threat actually be relevant but I didn't find that to be a problem in this game. I kind of doubt many Cryx lists will manage to produce better threat ranges than Deneghra so that's a good test.

More Cryx testing needed for sure but this series of games was a good start for my pair I think. I wish I could play them more often but they simply are not common in my meta. If anything though Cygnar's probably innately better in this matchup so I'll have to hope for that to carry the day if I meet something I don't know too well.

Battle Report #253: Haley2 vs Deneghra1

:: Prologue ::

I had 2 games vs Deneghra1 today. One with Haley2 and one with Caine2. Following yesterday's games with Haley2 and Coven it was time to try another flavour of Cryx! First up: Haley2.

:: Lists ::

Cygnar:
(Haley 2) Major Victoria Haley [+25]
- Thorn [13]
- Stormwall [39]
- Squire [5]
- Ironclad [12]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
- Minuteman [9]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [4]
Gobber Tinker [2]
Storm Lances (min) [12]
Opponent:
(Deneghra 1) Warwitch Deneghra [+28]
 - Kraken [36]
 - Deathripper [6]
Croe's Cutthroats (max) [16]
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (max) [19]
Soul Trapper [1]
Wrong Eye [17]
 - Snapjaw0]
Necrotech [2]
Necrotech [2]
Warwitch Siren [4]

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

The scenario is Line Breaker and I move first. I want to get control of one unit of infantry as soon as possible so as not to deal with a flurry of shots that have me at -5 armour on his feat turn.

:: Game ::

The Satyxis proxy as Croe's. I figure they are the easiest to put pressure on because they can't CRA so I start on the left. The Minuteman moves towards the right to ensure that if he wants to advance the Nyss they could be in trouble.

Cryx advance on all flanks!

Stormwall moves to 12.1" away from Kraken, pod to the left and I leap to kill 3 Cutthroats. I throw up Deflection and TK the Minuteman which goes in to kill 4-5 Nyss.

Arc Node runs up and throws Crippling Grasp on the 'wall, Parasite on Ironclad. Shooting ensues, I don't lose boxes at all as the Kraken has a love for 1s and 2s. Cutthroats put 3 boxes on a Lance. Crucially, Nyss leave the Minuteman on 4 boxes!

I want to put scenario pressure on Cryx so I charge the objective with a TA Stormwall. The Minuteman clears the Nyss with Flak Field and takes the flag. The Lances leap 3 more Cutthroats and Haley feats. Ironclad kills Snapjaw. 2-0.

Deneghra counter-feats and this time I lose 20-25 boxes on the 'wall. Wrongeye has to contest the right flag.

I take the flag on the left with the Lances and the one on the right after I TK Wrongeye and kill him with Ironclad. 4-0.

Cryx can't contest the right flag without running the Kraken and there are no angles to kill Haley so the game is over.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

I can definitely see Deneghra1 still being one of Cryx's best casters. What enabled me to take this game home fairly easily was the enormous amount of damage I managed to put on him on -both- flanks. If Deneghra had managed to conserve these better and added their weight to her feat I could very well have been in trouble.

It's probably a trick matchup to play I think but the Ironclad is a piece which does a lot of work for Haley2 here. The crippling grasp *will* land on the 'wall, there is nothing you can do about that. While that is painful, it means it must resort to shooting as its primary strength and the rest of the list needs to get work done. They are more than capable of doing so and indeed the 'wall didn't do that much on his own this game.

Battle Report #252: Coven vs Haley2

:: Prologue ::

Following the first game I really wanted to give Coven a try myself, partly to try an approach I believe would work well and partly to learn them better. There's a lot of value in swapping lists every now and then. Besides, what Cryx player hasn't longed for Temporal Shift?

:: Lists ::

Cygnar:
(Haley 2) Major Victoria Haley [+25]
- Thorn [13]
- Stormwall [39]
- Squire [5]
- Ironclad [12]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
- Minuteman [9]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [4]
Gobber Tinker [2]
Storm Lances (min) [12]
Cryx:
The Witch Coven of Garlghast - WJ: +26
-    Egregore
-    The Withershadow Combine - Maelovus, Admonia & Tremulus: 9
-    Barathrum - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15)
-    Stalker - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 😎
-    Deathripper - PC: 6 (Battlegroup Points Used: 3)
Machine Wraith - PC: 2
Bane Riders - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
Bane Riders - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
Soulhunters - Leader & 4 Grunts: 18
Satyxis Raiders - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16
-    Satyxis Raider Sea Witch - PC: 3

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

Same map and scenario and I move first as Cryx. The idea is to create strategical depth, that is basically swarm the center of the table in models. I deploy as symmetrically as I can so I can skew whatever way I need with infantry central. Haley replies with a Stormwall on the left.

:: Game ::

The idea is clear enough: Skew right, jam Stormwall + middle, make a scenario play and feat early to buy space. I run up T1 and thrown down Veil next to the cloud from Fuel Cache. Occultation is up on Soulhunters

Haley understands how much more careful she has to play with Cryx threatening far up the table. The Cygnar start is slow and cautious.

I contemplate jamming with Satyxis but decide not to. Instead I send the cav up to form a front line and spread the satyxis out to create the strategical depth I want, essentially making it very costly for him to close on the Coven. Feat comes up and I have a very, very solid presence on the right part of the map.

Haley tries to send in some Lances and Thorn but with my feat up they can't accomplish a lot. She feats and catches a lot of my army but the Stormwall is stuck dealing with cav alongside the Ironclad.

Shift was expected but my models are far enough back to give me some options. I try and swarm Thorn (with Ghostly) to prevent Dodge and start hitting him and Lances. I don't quite clear the entire flank yet but it's getting there. More cav are sent to the 'wall to feed it. I had the Arc Node in the rubble from the turn before with Curse of Shadows up on the colossal so Haley had to respect the cav.

The cav are nearly all cleared out on the left flank but the right flank can't get enough work done.

I kill off the rest on the right flank and move to a 3-0 scenario lead with the Stormwall yet again jammed shut.

The broken Swans can't find an opening and I win on scenario.

Victory to Cryx!

:: Evaluation ::

The plan worked quite well! Haley needed to get more out of Stormwall and Ironclad here but failed to get them up the table in fear of counter-charges and too much power being projected on them. Barathrum behind Veil of Mists was a big threat in this game as Thorn was nowhere near being able to help out here.

Spreading out the Satyxis prevented Cygnar from getting up the table and put scenario pressure on me. There was just no place to land! The T2 feat is essential here, his models have to commit and risk being killed despite him feating if he goes in. He did indeed do so and this won me the flank.

Cryx and Coven were cool to try out but don't worry, I'm back to the Swans already ;)

Battle Report #251: Haley2 vs Coven

:: Prologue ::

Cryx is a faction I rarely get to play against but for a couple of days I have a friend staying at my plays. It so happens he's playing Cryx so I've arranged for a handful of games! First up was Haley2 vs Coven.

:: Lists ::

Cygnar:
(Haley 2) Major Victoria Haley [+25]
- Thorn [13]
- Stormwall [39]
- Squire [5]
- Ironclad [12]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]

Bane Riders - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
Soulhunters - Leader & 4 Grunts: 18
Satyxis Raiders - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16
-    Satyxis Raider Sea Witch - PC: 3

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

We are playing Recon and Cryx seize the initiative. My idea is to stall scenario openings for him and slowly attrition him down. I don't see what he can effectively do against the 'wall here.

:: Game ::

Cryx run up. My opponent is a little afraid to commit and thus ends up far behind. I question the move and we discuss it briefly but sometimes you just have to play things out to see how it ends up.

I try and capitalize on the opening I've been given by claiming the right flank, shutting down any moves he might want to make there, while putting Ironclad and Thorn ready to intervene on the other flank. Stormwall runs up to buy me space.

Cryx move up and a couple of models jam me but I have a feeling it's not enough. We discuss this for a bit too but the T1 positioning doesn't allow for anything resembling an effective jam.

The idea is to make a decisive alpha by clearing out the 'wall and have it charge barathrum under feat. I do this and it works out very well. I also kill a ton of models on the right flank.

Coven feat and move up but it's kind of too late. Too few models left and no scenario pressure.

I clear out most of his remaining models and get Haley away to safety.

Cryx look for assassination angles but there are none. Since I have 0 models contesting the zone he could conceivable have gone for a scenario move but I don't see how he gets to 5 points. My opponent gives up.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

It's usually not a good idea for Cryx to hit the brakes vs Haley2. This game was no exception and it shows that you can't give Haley an inch. My list is fragile and doesn't cope well with losing models. When I can move up the table as I want on top of that without being in threat ranges or facing scenario pressure it's just an extremely hard game for Cryx.

I've never played Coven before and I think their feat might've been more of a biggie if the push had been more aggressive coupled with an early feat. A very interesting caster! I think Haley2 is up still because of the combination of threat ranges, lack of ARM-answer from Cryx and better scenario play.

Battle Report #250: Haley2 vs Vlad1

:: Prologue ::

For the final game of the night I wanted to see how Haley2 is into Vlad1. Vlad's shooting is absolutely terrifying and I wanted to see if she can get up the table and start creating space before it's too late.

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

I won the rollof and decided to go last. I figured this would likely be the hardest for me and wanted a real challenge. I placed everything centrally ish but in hindsight I should've gone further to the right. The woods between the objective and the flag there make it hard for him to contest - as last game indeed showed!

:: Game ::

One unit of rifles run right, the other stays behind the main lines. I think it's a mistake not to push all Rifles hard up as long as you can possibly get when you go first against Haley2...

...because as the picture below shows, I can send up quite a few of my models in return without fearing for their safety. The Stormwall takes care to be within 12" of his objective. The Ironclad is behind the cloud alongside the Minuteman and the Lances are all outside of the Rifles' threat range.

Rifles on the right sweep far right. Interesting move because I can't contest them even if I feat due to where I need Haley, but this also means they won't be participating much on the left flank - where I indeed have most of my weight. The rest of his list pushes up a bit.

It's go time! The idea is to have the Stormwall and Ironclad combine to take out the 2 Ragers and the objective. Lances jam Behemoth and Thorn scores me a point. However dice happen and not only do I not get the objective, I don't even kill both Ragers. I would've gone for a different play here by dominating out Behemoth but with Midwinter in play there was just no chance. At least the Stormwall killed him now. Feat is up.

The Rifles on the left get S&P and boosted rolls to clear out Lances. Behemoth shoots Thorn for a bit of damage. The rest shoot the Stormwall and Ironclad.

On the right the Minuteman is able to clear out 3 Rifles. Unfortunately no Rocketeers I think. On the left flank the idea is to have Thorn disrupt the Behemoth and the Rager just in case I fluke. However fluke takes on a whole new meaning here as the Stormwall and Ironclad fail to kill Ruin (granted the Ironclad spent both initials and possibly a focus to take out the objective). Fuck me those are some crazy dice. He's left on 1 box.

Weeell that's just pretty disastrous. Behemoth considers his options and kills Thorn. Ruin hits the wall and strips Shield. Shooting follows up for massive damage. S&P doing work as per usual.

Now with the current position Vlad is basically dead except for the fact that the Ironclad has to tank a free strike from Ruin to get in and get work done following a throw from the Stormwall. I've taken some damage and despite the systems being crippled I can't risk that. It's back to looking at other options. With Thorn dead I have no control of Behemoth and I can't get Shield back up on the 'wall. I decide to continue with the scenario play: Load up Stormwall, have it kill as many things as possible including the objective and hopefully disrupt Behemoth with its last pod. Haley TKs the Minuteman so it can get 3 dudes in its flak field: winning the attrition on the right flank is becoming very important. I throw up Deflection (which I forget during Khador's turn) and junior gives Haley Shield. The Behemoth disruption is successful. 3-0.

Having discovered the joy of killing my Stormwall in our first game today my opponent continues. Behemoth disrupted? No problem! Feat and charge for 28 boxes and we have ourselves another dead colossal.

Luckily the damage was rather spread last turn. I should've taken a lot less because of Deflection but I was tired and more than a little frustrated over how poorly the attrition part of this game was going. In any case I was still in a decent position, I just needed to move Haley slowly towards the top right flag but be careful to do so safely. I killed off a couple of models with her bolt + shot and the Ironclad killed 2 contesting Rifles while the Minuteman walked up for the 4-0.

Without any angles to reliably contest me my opponent tried for one last hail mary assassination: I had positioned Haley outside of 18" of the Behemoth so he needed lucky scatters. He didn't get them and the game was over.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::
I wonder what would have happened if Khador had instead pushed up all rifles to the max more or less, just pre-measuring to take care no Rockets could be taken out unless I had gone for crazy Thorn all-in moves. In doing so I believe he buys the space so I can't set up for a proper scenario threat in the first place. My list lacks elements to deal with shooting that threatens this far and in such large numbers and the Rifles with S&P support and For The Motherland are really effective against everything in my army barring the Stormwall.

The way this game developed I wasn't in as much control as I thought I would've been based on the position after I feated. Some of it definitely came down to dice, but the fact is that his army deals incredibly much damage. If he had gotten the second rifles relevant sooner this might have turned out ugly.

Vlad1 is a powerful caster for sure and this list is very strong for him. I find it almost builds itself and the points just add up perfectly. I'm glad Khador has more game into Cygnar than they did in Mk. 2. It's good for the game as a whole to eliminate matchups which are too one-dimensional.
