Internal Affairs Mk. XI Game 3 (#523): Haley2 vs Elara2

:: Prologue ::

Day 2. Game 1 sees me pair up vs Retribution. My opponent has Rahn in Forges and Elara2 in Defenders. I drop Haley2 and receive Elara2. I've never played against her nor the theme before so I was excited!

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

The scenario was Outlast 2 and Elara went first. I skewed heavily to one side to allow my Storm Strider a safe haven. There's no way it can go centrally here with Elara's feat making her entire army threat 15". They'll shred it to bits. This meant giving up a lot of board space. I was hoping my attrition game would be strong enough to open up the center before Elara could run away in terms of CP.

:: Game ::

Advanced move + desperate pace + reposition 3" meant the Halbs could get up awefully quick despite going in Shield Wall.

The pressure was on so high that I contemplated feating turn 1. I found another play though which let me hold my feat for a turn and then get back into it later. It's a risky play because if Ret manages to play this cautiously and bide out the time it can be very hard for me to get back from yielding this much table space.

Luckily for me, my opponent keeps advancing. I feel pretty secure now that I can clear out his infantry in time.

I try and find an angle where Thorn can go in and get work done, but it's impossible without risking him. I simply cannot do that! The AFG in the center is a big deal right now, it really has a command position and my opponent has managed to spread out perfectly: I am quite simply unable to find an aggressive play here.

Instead I settle for the conservative approach: Take some pot-shots, clear out dudes, keep my things safe.

Remaining Halbs on the left jam me. They are so fast despite my feat being up!

I run Thorn up, Dominate the Sphinx closer, TK out the AFG, clear some Halbs, kill Sphinx in melee, rotate Strider towards the center. I make one horrible mistake: Haley moves left instead of right. I go for the "innate safety" of the rock, what I need is quite frankly to put distance between myself and the Halberdiers. In panic I run up the Squire to blocker her out after my Reliant fails to kill Halberdiers with boosted damage rolls on a Trample.

Luckily for me, my opponent doesn't go for Haley. He's pretty far down at this point so I think it would've been his best chance. He tries to kill the Reliant however to keep scoring and maybe have a chance here. Alas, his dice are beyond terrible and Reliant stands.

At this point the game's virtually over, it's a mop-up for me.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Man, SR2017 is so different! It's like learning to play all over again. Some pretty crazy plays are doable and you have to reconsider everything you thought you knew. The Storm Strider was really hard to get value out of in this matchup, so incredibly exposed and with such a big footprint he is a big, clumsy piece of metal. As per usual his big ranged game makes up for it, sort of anyway.

Elara2 Defenders was an interesting list. I think my opponent went too aggro top of 1. I was able to deal with his attack in waves and applied a lot of firepower as early as bottom of 1. His win condition here is to drag out the game I think, which forces me to yield table space. However to do so he needs to conserve his models, which he was unable to do here. A couple of more turns of scoring in the left zone and this game would've been a lot harder.

Our team finally won a round! Every player won his game, which was just amazing. A perfect start for the last day following a very rough day 1.

Internal Affairs Mk. XI Game 2 (#522): Sloan vs Krueger2

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

We were playing Breakdown and Krueger took first turn. My plan was to stay tight so as not to get screwed over by Ambushers.

:: Game ::

Krueger casts Windstorm and charges up. His beasts run in front of him, into the trench...

Literally every heavy gun in my list can see Krueger since models in a trench don't block LoS to those behind. I feat and kill Krueger...

It turns out my opponent had received one job: Don't let me grab any CPs! The matchup was deemed so terrible that they agreed to just throw him under the bus completely. The "mistake" of letting me have LoS to Krueger was indeed intentional.

2 short games. Oh well, at least I got to take a picture of everyone else playing (this is our local club, by the way):

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Not much to say about this game. I will say though that a game is practically never 0%. We had CP as the second tie breaker so getting the mission to prevent CP scored seems extreme. Sloan is very strong into Circle and neither of the counters they have were present in my opponent's pairing. If it were me I'd still take my chances I think. Unfortunately our team lost again so we were 0-2 for the day.

Internal Affairs Mk. XI Game 1 (#521): Haley2 vs Deneghra1

:: Prologue ::

This weekend we had a team tournament at our local club. My team was one of the Norwegian WTC teams and together with 4 other teams we played a different format where everyone meets everyone. This is different from a normal tournament and ensures that you get a lot of games despite being relatively few teams.

The tournament allowed full CID access. I took the TimeStorm™ list I've played with Haley2 recently accompanied by my trusted Sloan list. I had originally intended to try out the Hurricane with Sloan but I wanted a decent mirror drop and here the Stormwall is still superior for Sloan in my opinion.

For our first game I got paired up against a somewhat unconventional Cryx list: Deneghra1 in Ghost Fleet with lots of incorporeal stuff, but no pirates!

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

The scenario was The Pit 2 and Deneghra won the roll-off. My opponent deployed heavily skewed on the right flank. I didn't want to give up my magic-attack granting objective so I deployed opposite him.

:: Game ::

Deneghra runs her stuff up, Wraith Engines being careful and Blackbanes taking ground in the center.

I thank the Blackbanes for clumping together: The Hurricane kills a few with its guns and Haley Time Bombs the trench to kill 4 more.

Deneghra goes for an alpha feat on the Storm Strider. Unfortunately for my opponent he needed a Stalker to finish the job. It was exactly 13" out so once it made one attack it bounced back out.

Deneghra had to ghost walk the Stalker for it to get into the Strider and together with Parasite and allocation this meant she was out of focus. She didn't catch Thorn in her feat so I ran him up and nuked Deneghra with Haley. The Hurricane finished her off with his AOE4 cannons, killing her before all the electro leap models could start doing their thing.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Quick game! Cryx made a few positional mistakes which let me get a pretty big start. The double Wraith Engine is scary, however it's something I can deal with. With no pirate recursion around I don't have to deal with a thousand things at once.

The decision to keep the right flank so defensive allowed me to gain some table space on the right flank without exposing any crucial elements unnecessarily. Yes, the Strider did have to move within 13" of a Stalker to get within 4" of the objective, however neither Wraith Engine could run and engage it. They were too cautious turn 1 I believe.

I really want to try this out against a proper Ghost Fleet list. Hopefully I'll get the opportunity soon!

Battle Report #520: Haley2 vs Severius1

:: Prologue ::

For our second game of the night we tried out the rumoured Protectorate Exemplar theme against TimeStorm. My opponent and I dojo'd this list the day in advance and we were both really excited to see it in action. I truly believe Protectorate is a little behind now and I hope that the Exemplar theme will help against some of their harder matchups, which Haley2 is definitely a part of.

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

The theme will be official very soon I believe, but TL;DR it gives him a few bonuses and his warjacks all gained Blessed on their weapons. Severius won the roll-off for this game. I was wondering how I could advance without simply being shot to death...

:: Game ::

Severius' force runs up. Vengers receive Defender's Ward and line up on the right, LoS-blocking everything just about. The shooty jacks receive Passage and are kind of hard for me to engage.

In return I decide to feat-charge. This means that even if Severius gets me in range of his feat I will catch his entire army. This dynamic is very hard for Haley in this matchup because she's so exposed.

We look at some situations and run some numbers in odds machine. It turns out that my play is too risky: Haley is too likely to just die here. Instead of contemplating how I could've made a better fort we decide to play it out on attrition to better understand how this matchup is. Severius counter-feats and his forces block up. One Reckoner is sacrificed to tie up my left flank.

Severius isn't nearly well enough protected here. It's interesting how much the "build a fort" issue goes both ways here. We mini-feat models around to provide a fort which is strong enough to make assassination highly unlikely and play attrition from there. I wipe out most of the Knights.

There are 2 KE left: Officer and a grunt. One charges the Firefly and half kills it, the other Thorn and half kills him. The healthy Reckoner charges the Hurricane and receives support from the Redeemers. It comes pretty close to killing it off, which says a lot about the potential power in this list: Look at how much I've already killed!

Seeing as the Stormwall survives, we call the game. I'll take it from here quite comfortably.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Wow, very interesting game! I must say that post-HR feat nerf this is the hardest match I've had against Protectorate for sure. I have a lot of faith in this new theme force of theirs and Severius1 is a very natural counter to Haley2. Suffice is to say that this is an experience-intensive matchup and I already look forward to learning it in detail!

I think this matchup largely boils down to feats. Not the feats themselves, but what they deny, and how the casters can be safe while feating. Learning to build Fort Haley is always interesting. Sometimes you mess it up and die. Sometimes you get it right and break the game. The same feels like it might hold true for Severius1 here. Both lists are incredibly destructive and any mistake might just open an angle which turns the game around.

Battle Report #519: Haley2 vs High Reclaimer

:: Prologue ::

As part of our WTC preparations we play team games. We mimic the WTC process with lists, pairing etc. For this round I was paired against Protectorate and received High Reclaimer into my Haley2 list.

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

We are playing Breakdown and I get to go last. I'd prefer going first, but it should be fine anyway. Plan: Create a tight center, lash out where I need to with shooting, don't feat and commit unless I can get a decisive attrition play. Leave jacks alone if possible, if all units die I basically win almost no matter what.

:: Game ::

Idrians spread out and mini-feat. The right-most unit receives Hand of Fate.

Keep everything far back, TA on Firefly, pod to spark off of. Cyclone and Charger somewhat offensively placed but quite a few Idrians die so it shouldn't be a problem.

Idrians take pot shots at my two shooters but no significant damage is done.

I check that the Stormwall can kill Aiyana -and- Holt with a pod if I charge in with Temporal Acceleration. I go for it and get the both of them plus a few Idrians. The shooty jacks all clear tons of Idrians and I feat.

So... With the Attendant Priest my opponent can just feat Aiyana back up. Ouch. That was not a part of my calculation. Prey, Kiss, blessed, Hand of Fate... TL;DR my opponent goes for the 'wall. The rolls are terrible though and it survives on 2 boxes.

I contemplate two courses of actio nfor the 'wall here: Commit Thorn (and it) to kill Eye and just leave it, or back off, keep shooting and force Protectorate to advance. I decide on the latter, it just feels like the safer play (in many ways because I keep Thorn, he is such an MVP in this matchup). The Stormwall doesn't get a lot out of its shooting but it forces my opponent to commit if he wants to avoid having Arlan simply repair it turn after turn.

The remaining forces commit and kill the 'wall, just barely with a huge damage roll from Eye. Scourge camps 3.

Scourge on 3 = 3 denied TKs. Well, I have 4. The 4th turns Eye around and I kill him with Thorn and the Stormclad. I start scoring now as well.

We would rather play a second game and get home before it gets too late so my opponent concedes, understandably. With both Thorn and the Stormclad outside of Scourge's threat range the game is essentially over anyway.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Protectorate struggles against Cygnar, no doubt. I believe the Exemplar theme will help that (more on that in just a few minutes!), but right now it's just too hard for them to face Haley2. I made a big, big mistake here by committing because I forgot Aiyana could be feated back up. Even then I think I'm favoured to win even if the 'wall had gone down. That says a thing or two about just how hard this matchup is for HR.

I also had a "what if?" in the back of my mind. Yeah, TimeStorm would probably wreck this HR variant even harder.

Battle Report #517 & #518: Haley2 vs Sloan

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

Same map and scenario. First game Sloan starts. My idea? Try and keep stuff alive, maybe feat very early to buy space.

:: Game 1 ::

Sloan runs stuff up, spreads out a bit.

I run stuff up and feat, catching 3 Hunters and the 'wall.

My Hurricane dies. I forfeit, there's no angle on Sloan. I really wonder what the odds are for this!

:: Game 2 ::

We restart, this time I start. My idea is to run towards Sloan as hard and as fast as can be done.

Fort Haley is built.

Sloan feats. Storm Strider dies. Thorn dies. Reliant takes a hard pounding.

I run everything in Sloan's direction and feat.

Sloan is unable to get very far away...

...so I kill her.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

Well, this feels bad. I think that Sloan is favourable into most/all variants of Haley2. With a colossal present you can simply just wait. A charge to the face from an enemy Cygnar colossal will never kill you. Feating early then isn't even a must, you can save it and let Haley2 alpha you often times. The feat is just brutal, so much damage.

Sloan's one issue here is survivability. In the last game this is indeed why she lost and I think putting her in the trench would have been more sensible. With practice I think it should be fairly easy to keep her alive.

Battle Report #516: Haley2 vs Karchev

:: Prologue ::

I wanted to try out the Storm Strider. I dojo'd it a bit with Haley2. The idea was to find a compromise where I could maintain the majority of my anti-armour capabilities while increasing the list's ability to deal with infantry lists, e.g. Ghost Fleet and Operating Theatre variants. At first I couldn't find anything I liked but then I started looking outside of the box... The inclusion of a Reliant made me more than a little skeptical, but I figured it would be worth at least trying out.

What better to try it against than Karchev? If the list can handle this much ARM it should have enough melee punch for virtually any thinkable matchup.

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

This report will be fairly short. We played Spread the Net and the idea was to see if Karchev's (proxied) force could overwhelm me.

:: Game ::

Khador start, battle-charged, run.

TK + TA on Storm Strider, some pretty good shots into a Jugger on the right flank.

Khador runs again. I forget to take a picture at the end of Khador's turn. I took out a Juggernaut with ranged attacks on the right flank and TK'd + Dominated out a Devastator in the center. 2 heavies down, no reason to feat. Junior's Firefly jams a Marksman on the left flank.

Karchev runs his jacks up further.

Feat turn! I let stuff hit jacks in melee as much as possible. Domination ensures second Devastator goes down.

Sadly for Khador, not much to do under my feat. Shuffle.

I clear out the right flank, the remaining jack there is basically dead. Thorn disrupts the remaining heavies in the middle, both of which have taken damage as well.

We discuss the situation for a bit. Even if Karchev kills the 'wall there's no way he'll win the game. He cannot hurt anything else in my list barring insane dice and even then I'm up on scenario and can probably just kill him (I think attrition from here is fine even). My opponent concedes.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

I must say I was positively surprised by what this list was capable of. I had some hot dice initially but they started failing me later on (the Hurricane missing like crazy in melee for example, hardly ever taking out a Khador heavy without help). Overall I would say that the nature of this matchup is in Haley's favour still. The Reliant's melee output was an important factor here. It's not that PS17 is that hot, but it's the list's ability to constantly produce attacks which hurt. Obviously this isn't the prime targets for the Reliant, but it was still an important piece.

The Storm Strider was MVP. Did tons of damage and was a big safety net out on the flank. If I had somehow gotten in trouble previously it would've been easy to sacrifice it to buy Haley time and space to get away.

List overall performed better than I had hoped for. A very, very interesting variant!
