Iron Moot: Iron Gauntlet #2 (#267): Haley2 vs Haley3

:: Prologue ::

The second game of the Iron Gauntlet Qualifiers and none other than my good friend Olov Winroth is opposing me! I discuss Cygnar a lot with Olov and I've been wanting a rematch ever since he beat me at Lund (he ruined an otherwise perfect streak for me with a top of 2 assassination which you can read about here). He had Haley3 and Caine2 as his main pair for Iron Moot and a tooled Haley2 list as his third for Iron Gauntlet which was tailor-made to play into Wurmwood. I was 95% sure he'd drop Haley3 here and I dropped Haley2 in return, eager to get revenge. Let's get to it!

:: Pre-Battle Thoughts & Deployment ::

We are playing Entrenched and I win the roll-off. It takes me about 0.1 seconds to call "first turn". Haley3 absolutely hates going second as she gets absolutely no work done bottom of 1. My idea here is to set up very aggressively for a top of 2 alpha and just go from there.

:: Game ::

I make a technical mistake as I am too eager with the Lances and thus end up blocking my Ironclad. This is a big problem because the Ironclad is an excellent piece to send in, bullet-style, if an opening presents itself. I just hope it won't be a big deal.

Olov replies with the usual Haley3 play and I am literally amazed at how quickly and precisely he gets into the position. He manages the traffic jam issues so well in so little time that it's evident he knows this list -very- well. I truly am impressed because I find my own game with Haley3 lacking so much it's not even funny.

As he finished up his turn however he makes a huge mistake: He puts Arcane Shield on the Trenchers instead of Haley3 as he fears e-leaps onto pods. Can you tell from the picture below why this is a mistake?

The answer is a classic Mk. 3 throw rules abuse. With pre-measuring and non-deviating throws I can place a Lance on top of Haley, knock her down and push her closer towards me. We agree on all distances, the Lance lands on her, Thorn runs up into the clouds and Haley2 arcs Arcane Bolts onto Haley3 until she dies.

Victory to the Swans!

:: Evaluation ::

I must admit, paying back the last game's top of 2 assassination with a top of 2 assassination of my own felt great. Olov camped 2 focus so with Arcane Shield this is not in my favour and I would've needed to do something else entirely.

The way the game played out the winning move is a perfect example of why I love the Stormwall. Angles like this add to Haley2's incredible array of shenanigans and openings and it's very easy to forget. Olov is no stranger to throws but as he told me after the game, he's used to being the one doing the throws not the one being thrown on.

The attrition game here would likely be a bloody and long-fought affair. Repudiate allows him to put so much hurt onto the Stormwall. I would probably have looked for an opening on the jacks he had on his left flank (TK + Domination shenanigans for example) but the Ironclad mistake T1 make this harder than it should've been. A Lance running past the Grenadier for example denies him Cover from Dig In so there were definitely options. When faced with an assassination this strong though there was no doubt in my mind. Always look for the best chance to win and always take it if something like this pops up.
